Bravo, Stew. The pictures at the end of your essay made my eyes leak. That we (term used loosely) have at our disposal solutions to so much of what troubles the world yet CHOOSE to let it persist is the greatest tragedy of human existence.

I've worked, voluntarily and for pay, in situations where it was all drama and limited/no leadership. Soul sucking.

That quote you chose I must actually attribute to my editor, Busy, who rewrote that paragraph.

I’ll have to think about your point: that “we choose” to let troubles persist. We as a nation? As a species? As a government? Maybe your sentiment applies across the board!

I believe there are those who benefit from our existing patriarchal and capitalistic systems and those who don’t. And that there are a whole lot of people in between, who aren’t overtly harmed but who understand, at least in principle, the dangers.

For the most part, two of the three groups aren’t motivated to change what is. So they (we) make choices that serve to further sustain the systems in place. Part of what’s happening now is that the awareness of how many are in harms way has expanded. Terrifying and damaging, but mobilizing all the same.
